Malaysia's Parliament Open Day Aims to Engage Young Citizens with Democracy

The Malaysian Parliament Open Day 2026, scheduled for Sept 12 and 13 in Kuala Lumpur, is promoted as a major outreach effort to bring young people closer to the country's democratic system. Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman stressed that youth are not only future leaders but also current ones who need direct exposure to parliamentary debate and decision-making. The event will host roughly 40 exhibitions from government agencies and private firms, showcasing robotics, virtual reality, e-sports, futsal, local film screenings and a blood-donation drive.

Visitors can tour both houses of Parliament—the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara—and learn about the duties of MPs, the Speaker and parliamentary staff. Activities are designed for all ages, with a special focus on participants aged 18-30, encouraging them to voice opinions on issues such as housing, education, healthcare and employment. Organisers anticipate more than 10,000 attendees across the two days.
