Malaysia's Securities Commission plans taskforce to boost company secretaries' competence
The Securities Commission announced it will create a multi-stakeholder taskforce to raise the competency and accountability of company secretaries at listed firms.
During a speech in Kuala Lumpur, SC chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi revealed plans for a multi-stakeholder taskforce aimed at strengthening the skills and accountability of company secretaries in listed companies. He explained that secretaries now act as trusted advisers and internal voices that help boards ask the right questions, not merely record minutes. The initiative stems from stakeholder input gathered while revising the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance 2026, which underscored the need for clearer competency standards.
The SC will work with Bursa Malaysia to develop a regulatory framework that includes fit-and-proper requirements. The effort is part of a broader push to enhance Malaysia's corporate governance amid technological change, AI, sustainability pressures and geopolitical uncertainty.
