Malaysia's Sepang Grand Prix Generates Nearly RM950 Million Economic Boost

The Formula 1 race in Sepang attracted about 261,000 spectators and is estimated to have delivered roughly RM950 million in economic impact, according to figures cited by the youth and sports ministry.

According to data from Formula 1 Management, the Sepang Grand Prix held from October 2-4 attracted roughly 261,000 attendees, of which about 103,000 were present on race day, and was broadcast to an audience of 827 million globally. Ticket sales exceeded 97,000, and the event welcomed more than 50,000 overseas tourists together with around 5,000 foreign workers. Minister Dr Taufiq Johari said the presence of these visitors lifted earnings for the tourism, hospitality, aviation sectors and local small-medium enterprises, reinforcing Malaysia's image as a premier sports and investment hub.

He noted that a cost-benefit study, conducted by SIC with a consulting firm, is still in progress to assess whether future F1 races are justified. The race follows Malaysia's previous hosting of the Grand Prix from 1999 to 2017, which ended due to rising costs and licensing fees.

Why it matters

The event's sizable economic contribution highlights the financial stakes of hosting major international sports competitions.
