Malaysia Secures Historic Myanmar Agreement to Repatriate Migrants at Myanmar's Expense

Malaysia announced it is the first nation to persuade Myanmar to accept the return of its migrants, with all costs covered by Myanmar.

At a monthly Communications Ministry assembly coinciding with National Sports Day 2026, spokesperson Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil declared that Malaysia had become the first country to convince Myanmar to accept the return of its migrants, a milestone praised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as an extraordinary diplomatic accomplishment. All repatriations are to be financed by Myanmar, and the first phase already moved 1,476 Myanmar nationals aboard three ships, one of which was a Myanmar navy hospital vessel.

Fahmi noted that President Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit in early October paved the way for discussions on a larger operation targeting more than 3,000 migrants from various ethnic groups. He urged state media to monitor developments and linked the effort to other diplomatic successes, including visits by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, as well as the Global Sumud project supporting Palestinians. The initiative highlights Malaysia’s drive to boost its global standing while addressing humanitarian concerns.
