Malaysia sees two-million rise in vehicle registrations, prompting transport-policy response
A parliamentary reply revealed that Malaysia added about two million vehicles since the end of 2024, with 1.62 million new registrations in 2025.
In response to a parliamentary question, the ministry disclosed that vehicle registrations have risen by around two million since the close of 2024, reaching approximately 40 million total. The 2025 figures show 1.62 million new vehicles, split between 847,000 cars and 703,000 motorcycles. Of the 26.6 million active vehicles, cars account for nearly 16 million and motorcycles for 9.57 million.
Lawmakers were told that this growth fuels heavier traffic congestion, reduces productivity as commuters spend more time on the road, and increases both transport expenses and air-pollution levels. The ministry said it is promoting public-transport alternatives, citing the launch of the LRT3 line and the upcoming Mutiara LRT line as key initiatives.
Why it matters
