Malaysia sets goal to reach 100 million TEU port capacity by 2035

During a speech at the 2026 Malaysia Maritime Week, Transport Minister Anthony Loke detailed a national ambition to increase port handling capacity to 100 million TEUs by 2035. The roadmap includes a new port on Carey Island, the Westports 2 expansion at Port Klang, and Phases 3 and 4 of the Tanjung Pelepas development, along with upgrades at Kuantan and Kemaman. Loke noted that Port Klang remains among the world’s ten busiest container ports, with recent traffic growth of about 3.4 percent.

He linked the capacity boost to broader goals of expanding Malaysia’s shipping fleet, encouraging more vessels to fly the Malaysian flag, and fostering shipbuilding and repair jobs. Collaboration with the Malaysian Shipowners' Association will support these maritime industry objectives.
