Malaysia suspends type approval for Chery Omoda 5 after axle failure incident
The Road Transport Department has halted type approval and new registrations for the Chery Omoda 5 following a rear-axle detachment in Johor Baru.
The Road Transport Department (RTD) in Malaysia has withdrawn type approval for the Chery Omoda 5 after a video from Johor Baru revealed the vehicle’s rear axle completely separating. RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli announced that new registrations of the model are also suspended while a technical probe determines the cause and any safety hazards. Chery Malaysia is required to trace all cars that might be affected by examining part numbers, production batches and vehicle identification numbers, and to recall those units for inspection and repair.
The agency will also audit Chery’s production and assembly lines as well as the axle component suppliers, checking compliance with manufacturing practices, quality controls and weld inspections. The suspension will remain until all corrective measures are verified and safety concerns are resolved.
Why it matters
The halt could affect thousands of drivers and highlights vehicle safety oversight in Malaysia.
