Malaysia to acquire 526 locally built army vehicles by 2028

The Malaysian army will receive 526 domestically produced land vehicles in multiple batches through 2028, Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced.

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin revealed that the army will be supplied with 526 locally made land vehicles, delivered in stages up to 2028. The vehicles, spanning 18 variants, are being built by High Point Worldwide Sdn Bhd under the National Defence Industry Policy. Nordin stressed that contracts now consider contributions to the broader defence ecosystem, noting that 15% of the company's workforce are veterans.

He inaugurated the three-tonne cargo truck named Rentas and welcomed the development of two locally produced chassis, which could serve as a cost-saving basis for future models if they pass required tests. The ministry also urged defence suppliers to build local vendor networks for components such as lights and tyres.

Why it matters

The deal boosts Malaysia's defence self-reliance and creates jobs for military veterans.
