Malaysia to Build Sovereign AI Cloud to Safeguard Government Data

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced plans for a national AI-powered cloud that will keep classified information out of foreign jurisdictions.

Malaysia is moving ahead with a sovereign artificial-intelligence cloud to ensure that classified government data remains secure and beyond the influence of foreign laws, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil explained. The initiative follows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s earlier call for such a system and will be managed jointly by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Communications Ministry.

Officials argue that public cloud services can expose sensitive information to external policies, prompting the need for a dedicated national platform. The cloud project aligns with the Budget 2027 allocation of RM5 billion for the JENDELA programme, which aims to close the urban-rural internet gap and provide faster, more affordable connectivity. Improved broadband is expected to boost e-commerce, digital learning, and access to government services, while 5G and IoT applications could enhance agricultural productivity. The rollout is presented as essential for preserving Malaysia’s digital sovereignty and supporting its growing digital economy.
