Malaysia to introduce anti-scalping rules for event tickets by next year
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry said it is drafting legislation to curb ticket scalping, aiming for implementation next year.
In Kuala Lumpur, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry announced plans to craft a legal framework targeting ticket scalping, with a target rollout by next year. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh explained that officials are engaging with promoters and benchmarking practices from Australia, Ireland, Canada, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. Proposed measures include caps on bulk buying, restrictions on resale price hikes, and possibly mandating identification on tickets to deter resale.
The ministry noted that current anti-profiteering provisions, such as Section 15(1) of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, do not suit sporadic events, as investigations require three years of sales data. While awaiting formal rules, the ministry is running consumer awareness campaigns and urging organisers to self-monitor ticket sales.
Why it matters
It aims to protect consumers from inflated prices and fraud in the growing live-event market.
