Malaysia to launch MediAsas Plan offering affordable health and financial protection for middle-income families

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad announced that the MediAsas Plan will debut in January 2027, providing a financial and medical safety net for Malaysia's M40 group.

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said the MediAsas Plan will roll out in January 2027 to give Malaysia’s M40 households a financial and healthcare safety net amid soaring medical inflation. The standalone insurance and takaful product will feature two tiers - MediAsas Teras and MediAsas Flexi - and will cover individuals up to age 85. A pilot launched in the Klang Valley at the end of July lets participants pay premiums flexibly via the Employees Provident Fund’s Akaun Sejahtera (Akaun Dua). To aid vulnerable patients, the Tabung Bantuan Perubatan budget was raised by 50% to RM60 million for costly items such as bone implants and heart stents, while RM80 million was earmarked for the Peduli Kesihatan scheme targeting the B40 group.

Why it matters

The plan aims to prevent middle-income Malaysians from falling into poverty due to unaffordable medical treatment.
