Malaysia to table Senior Citizens Bill aimed at boosting elderly protection

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will soon present a Senior Citizens Bill to strengthen physical and mental safeguards for older Malaysians.

During the National-Level Senior Citizens Day ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri said a Senior Citizens Bill will be tabled in the cabinet shortly. The draft aims to reinforce both physical and mental well-being measures for the elderly, building on existing government frameworks. Shukri highlighted the bill’s focus on comprehensive protection and on encouraging seniors to serve as role models for younger generations.

Social Welfare Department director-general Che Murad Sayang Ramjan was present at the event. The minister also addressed concerns about motivational speakers, stating the ministry will work with relevant bodies to ensure speakers are properly qualified after a police report of a child sexual-harassment claim in Perlis. Police chief DCP Hamzah Hashim confirmed the investigation is underway under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Why it matters

The bill could reshape Malaysia's support system for an aging population, affecting seniors' rights and wellbeing.
