Malaysia to Take Delivery of First Two FA-50M Fighter Jets on Oct. 30

Malaysia will receive its initial pair of FA-50M light combat aircraft on Oct. 30, boosting its air-defence capabilities.

Malaysia is set to receive its first two FA-50M light combat aircraft on Oct. 30, according to Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The delivery follows a contract worth nearly RM4 billion signed in May 2023 with Korea Aerospace Industries for 18 FA-50 Block 20 jets, designated FA-50M for the Royal Malaysian Air Force. Nordin said the aircraft will initially be stationed at Kuantan Air Base in Pahang, with additional units to be deployed at Labuan Air Base in Sabah.

The procurement is intended to strengthen the nation’s air-defence posture. In related defence matters, Malaysia is evaluating missile systems from France, Italy and Turkiye as a replacement for a cancelled Naval Strike Missile deal, with a recommendation due next month. The selection process is expected to take three to four years.

Why it matters

The delivery enhances Malaysia's military readiness and signals deeper defence ties with South Korea.
