Malaysia to Transfer 292 UNIFIL Assets to Lebanese Forces by 2027

Malaysia will hand over 292 Malbatt items, valued at about US$10 million, to Lebanon's army as part of its UNIFIL pullout.

Malaysia is set to transfer 292 assets from its Malbatt contingent to the Lebanese Armed Forces, an operation valued at roughly US$10 million. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the equipment, which includes vehicles and various gear, will be handed over in phases until January 2027, with some items returning to Malaysia and others being disposed of in Lebanon. The symbolic handover took place at Marakah Camp, where the minister witnessed Joint Forces Commander Lieutenant-General Datuk Seri Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim present the assets to LAF representative Brigadier-General Bassem Saad.

This transfer concludes Malbatt 850-13, Malaysia's final UNIFIL unit, ending almost twenty years of Malaysian peacekeeping in the region. Nordin expressed hope that the equipment will aid the Lebanese army and local communities in humanitarian efforts. The process reflects Malaysia's broader withdrawal from the UN mission in southern Lebanon.

Why it matters

The handover ends Malaysia's 20-year UN peacekeeping role in Lebanon and bolsters the Lebanese army's resources.
