Malaysia trains 22,849 workers under semiconductor strategy, aims for 60,000 by 2030

By the third quarter, 22,849 people had completed training under Malaysia's National Semiconductor Strategy, part of a goal to develop 60,000 skilled engineers by 2030.

According to the third-quarter report, 22,849 participants have been trained under the National Semiconductor Strategy, marking progress toward Malaysia's ambition to produce 60,000 highly skilled engineers by 2030. Minister Johari Abdul Ghani explained to the Dewan Rakyat that the training is delivered by higher-education institutions and technical training providers, and that a whole-of-government approach links the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry.

The initiative seeks to upskill existing workers, strengthen vocational pathways and deepen collaboration between industry and academia. While the number of trainees is known, precise data on their employment sectors and retention rates remain incomplete, prompting coordinated data-collection efforts across ministries and industry players. Johari emphasized that success will be judged not only by headcounts but by relevant job placements and the ability to retain skilled workers within Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem. Ongoing coordination aims to sustain the country's position in the global semiconductor value chain.

Why it matters

It shows Malaysia's progress in building a skilled semiconductor workforce essential for its role in the global chip supply chain.
