Malaysia urges balanced AI, gig and e-commerce growth to safeguard jobs

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil warned that unchecked AI, gig work and e-commerce could harm workers and urged regulation alongside talent development.

At a dialogue session in Kuala Lumpur, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the risk of allowing AI, gig-economy platforms and e-commerce to expand without oversight, warning it could undermine workers' welfare and the business ecosystem. He called for a measured approach that permits "creative destruction" while protecting employment and public order. The remarks were made during the launch of the Communications and Multimedia Future Skills Framework, a strategic guide for talent development over the next five to ten years.

The framework, overseen by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Future Skills Talent Council, seeks to align curricula with industry needs. Panelists also included Higher Education Minister Zambry Abd Kadir and Deputy Human Resources Minister Khairul Firdaus Akhbar Khan, who echoed the commitment to create new job opportunities for graduates and TVET students.
