Malaysia urges cybersecurity to be treated as a national security priority

Experts say Malaysia should view cyber protection of government data as a national security issue, warning that breaches could affect defense and industry.

Speaking at the Cyber Digital Services, Defence & Security Asia (CyberDSA) 2026 event in Kuala Lumpur, Aras Integrasi Sdn Bhd’s cybersecurity practice director Faurani Jaafar warned that cyber breaches involving sensitive government information should be treated as national security threats, not merely IT problems. He highlighted that leaks of procurement data could reveal Malaysia’s future military acquisitions to rival nations.

Chief technology officer Farul Mohd Ghazali emphasized the need for indigenous investigative capacity, focusing on local ownership, operation and talent development, noting that Malaysia’s AI expertise can match overseas solutions. Aras Integrasi introduced three home-grown platforms: VoronCitadel for governance, risk and compliance; GovSec, an AI-assisted threat-intelligence tool built with CyberSecurity Malaysia; and chainSENTRY for blockchain transaction tracing. The company runs its research and development on 64 GPU units without relying on cloud services, aiming to broaden cooperation with government agencies and eventually expand into overseas markets.

Why it matters

Robust cyber defenses are essential to protect Malaysia's sensitive data and preserve its national security.
