Malaysia urges lifelong support for neurodivergent citizens as population ages

Malaysia's Women, Family and Community Development Minister highlighted the need for lifelong care plans for neurodivergent people as the nation ages.

Speaking at the "The Next Chapter" forum in Kuala Lumpur, Minister Nancy Shukri warned that Malaysia must expand disability planning to cover the entire lifespan of neurodivergent individuals, especially as the country approaches an ageing society with seniors projected to reach 15% of the population by 2036. She argued that care should no longer be an invisible burden shouldered mainly by families and women, but a shared responsibility across communities and government.

Prof V. Nathan of the Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society stressed the need for nationwide data on autistic people of all ages and services that address healthcare access, sensory-unfriendly environments, loneliness and caregiver strain. Dr Choy Sook Kuen, founder of Oasis Place, highlighted shortages of qualified health and allied-health professionals and the importance of training family caregivers. The forum tied these priorities to the National Plan of Action for Persons with Disabilities 2026-2030, the National Plan of Action for Older Persons 2026-2030 and the Malaysia Care Strategic Framework and Action Plan 2026-2030.

Why it matters
