Malaysia warns Balabac Island clashes could spill over into its territory

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said any conflict near the Philippines' Balabac Island could affect Malaysia as the US expands its military footprint there.

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin warned that any clash near the Philippines' Balabac Island could have repercussions for Malaysia, given the United States' expanding military presence there. He emphasized that the situation should be seen as a preparedness issue, not an immediate threat. The remark followed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's pledge to boost defence infrastructure in Sabah, a region close to Balabac, amid broader geopolitical uncertainty.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has linked the island's militarisation to tensions with China, while Malaysia remains concerned about the Philippines' claim over Sabah. Earlier reports indicated the US Army deployed HIMARS systems to Balabac. In parallel, Malaysia is pursuing a claim against a Norwegian firm after Norway withdrew an export licence for the Naval Strike Missile, evaluating alternative systems costing up to over RM1 billion. Khaled also announced plans to rebalance armed forces deployment between Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak.

Why it matters

The warning highlights how US military moves in the South China Sea could draw Malaysia into regional disputes.
