Malaysian couple and friends arrested in Tokyo after cocaine hidden in shoes
Five Malaysians were detained at Tokyo's Haneda Airport when authorities uncovered more than 5 kg of cocaine concealed in their shoes, each allegedly offered RM8,000 for the transport.
Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department officials reported that a Sarawakian man enlisted his wife and three friends to travel to Japan, where they were stopped at Haneda Airport on Oct 10 after Japanese authorities found over 5 kg of cocaine hidden inside their shoes. Each participant was promised RM8,000 to act as a drug mule. The party flew from Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur International Airport and then to Tokyo, using a travel agency based in Kuala Lumpur that police say was likely unaware of the illegal cargo.
All five travelers have no previous criminal history, and the travel agent has been released. Investigators continue to probe whether the group used similar methods on other trips or has broader links to the drug syndicate. Authorities urged Malaysians to be cautious of travel offers that involve carrying items such as shoes or bags abroad.
