Malaysian couple arrested with over 10kg of cannabis at Singapore's Tuas checkpoint
A 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old Malaysian woman were detained at Singapore’s Tuas Checkpoint after officers discovered about 10 kg of cannabis hidden on their motorcycle.
On Tuesday, a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old Malaysian woman rode a Malaysia-registered motorcycle to Singapore’s Tuas Checkpoint. Based on information from ICA’s Integrated Targeting Centre, the vehicle underwent enhanced checks, during which officers uncovered four bundles of suspected controlled substances beneath the seat. A subsequent search revealed six additional bundles in a black haversack attached to the handlebar, amounting to about 10.1 kg of cannabis.
Authorities estimate the seizure’s street value at more than S$203,000, enough to satisfy roughly 1,450 addicts for a week. The Central Narcotics Bureau took over the investigation, noting that under the Misuse of Drugs Act, import of over 500 g of cannabis can carry the death penalty. ICA said it will keep working with CNB to thwart drug smuggling and will maintain rigorous border checks for contraband. Investigations are ongoing.
