Malaysian higher education ministry tracks haze risks for students in Indonesia
The Higher Education Ministry is watching Indonesia's ongoing haze to protect Malaysian students studying there, said Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir.
At the 2026 Umno General Assembly, Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir announced that the ministry is actively monitoring the prolonged haze affecting Indonesia. Teams from Education Malaysia Global Services are tracking air quality across key islands, including Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi, where numerous Malaysian students are studying. The minister noted that, up to now, there have been no reports of serious impact on campuses, though he warned that severe pollution could force university closures and disrupt students' education.
EMGS staff have been instructed to provide regular updates to the ministry. The haze situation coincides with the recent eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on Sept 5, which added to regional environmental concerns.
