Malaysian schools in several states close on Oct 13 because of haze

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said schools in Johor, Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Putrajaya will be closed on Oct 13 due to haze, extending to selected districts in Selangor and Pahang.

Fadhlina Sidek announced that on Oct 13 schools in Johor, Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Putrajaya will not operate because of hazardous haze conditions. The directive further includes schools managed by the Hulu Langat, Petaling Perdana, Kuala Langat and Sepang District Education Offices in Selangor, together with those in Kuantan and Rompin districts of Pahang. Educational institutions in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, Penang, Perak, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak will continue as usual, though they must keep outdoor activities under close watch based on current air quality.

Authorities advise all parents, pupils and school personnel to wear appropriate face masks when outside, particularly in the most affected zones. Everyone is asked to follow updates from their respective school authorities, district education offices and state education departments.

Why it matters

The haze poses health risks and disrupts schooling for thousands of students across multiple Malaysian states.
