Malaysia’s SMART disaster team flies to Nepal to aid flood‑relief effort
An eleven‑person Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) has left Subang Air Base aboard a Royal Malaysian Air Force A400M, carrying more than 12 tonnes of rescue, detection and communications equipment, including high‑capacity drones and tunnel‑rescue tools. The team is expected to arrive in Kathmandu and receive an operational briefing before being deployed to the flood‑hit Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, where dozens of Malaysians remain missing.
A separate Malaysian team is already in Kathmandu assisting the embassy with DNA identification of the missing nationals. The Malaysian Foreign Ministry has also pledged a US$1 million aid package for Nepal, while families of the missing continue to press for swift action.
