Malcolm X College West Campus reopens with new Danny K. Davis Community Center

Malcolm X College celebrated the reopening of its expanded West Campus, featuring a renovated community center named for Rep. Danny K. Davis, and resumed in-person classes.

Malcolm X College marked the reopening of its West Campus after a $20 million expansion and renovation, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by college leaders, elected officials and community figures. The project transformed the former West Side Learning Center into the Danny K. Davis Community Center, honoring the U.S. Representative for his fundraising support. The updated 3,000-square-foot addition includes a contemporary exterior, outdoor patio, free parking and expanded recreational and meeting areas.

Dean Barbara Meschino noted that the upgraded campus, located near Austin and Garfield Park, can serve up to 2,000 students and offers prerequisite courses in biology, math and English, feeding into programs like nursing and community health. Student ambassador Don Allen, a community health worker trainee, expressed enthusiasm about the new resources for West Side residents. Classes resumed on the campus just before the second half of the fall semester began for City Colleges of Chicago students.
