Malian forces free 82 soldiers captured after April al-Qaeda linked raids

On Thursday, Mali's armed forces reported that 82 of its personnel, captured during the nationwide raids on April 25, have been liberated. Those raids, claimed by the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front, also resulted in the death of the defence minister. The army's statement described the release as the outcome of meticulous planning and a coordinated deployment of necessary assets.

The coalition behind the kidnappings also asserted responsibility for assaults on military sites on July 4. Since 2012, Mali has faced a persistent insurgency, and the JNIM network has expanded after the 2020 and 2021 coups that expelled roughly 15,000 French and U.N. troops and led the government to rely on Russian mercenaries for security support.
