Man accused of beheading wife dies after leaping from police vehicle in Guwahati

Ramanuj Goswami, who murdered and decapitated his wife Riya Talukdar, died from a head injury after jumping off a moving police van en route to a hospital.

Ramanuj Goswami, a cab driver from Guwahati, murdered his wife Riya Talukdar on September 3 after a dispute about her supposed extramarital relationship, then decapitated her and stored the head in a refrigerator. He turned himself in on the night of September 6, after which police recovered both the body and the head. While being escorted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for a medical examination on Monday, Goswami leapt from the moving police vehicle on Narakasur hill, suffering a severe head injury that led to his death.

He had been scheduled to appear before a court that same day, as his seven-day police custody period had ended. Earlier, he had threatened to kill the alleged “sugar daddy” of his wife and expressed no remorse for his actions. Authorities noted his history of substance-use treatment at a now-closed rehabilitation centre on Guwahati’s outskirts.

Why it matters

The death of a murder suspect while in police custody raises concerns about detainee safety and procedural handling.
