Man accused of raping 90-year-old woman in Corning later dies from injuries

Police say a man brutally raped a 90-year-old resident of Corning, who subsequently died from the assault.

New York police have charged 29-year-old Jonathon Rivaldo with a series of crimes after he allegedly broke into a Corning apartment and brutally raped a 90-year-old woman, who later died from her injuries. The suspect, originally from Rochester, has a criminal history that includes more than four years for aggravated vehicular assault in Monroe County but no prior sexual offenses. Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker called the incident the most disturbing case he has handled.

Rivaldo now faces first-degree assault, second-degree assault, robbery, third-degree intimidation of a victim, petit larceny and a recent charge for possessing a makeshift cutting instrument while awaiting trial. He will be represented by public defender Terry Baxter.

Why it matters

The case highlights severe violent crime against vulnerable seniors and raises concerns about repeat offenders.
