Abdalmasih Hanoun will be tried for attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a three-year-old British girl and 12 other victims at a lakeside park in Le Paquier, Annecy, in June 2023.
French authorities have ordered a trial for Abdalmasih Hanoun, who is accused of stabbing a three-year-old British tourist, identified locally as Ettie, and injuring 12 additional people at a lakeside park in Le Paquier, Annecy, in June 2023. The victims included three children aged between 22 months and three years and two senior citizens. Hanoun is charged with attempted murder of 13 victims, violence with a weapon against two victims, and armed resistance.
A forensic panel found he was not afflicted by any psychological or neuropsychological disorder that would impair his discernment at the time of the attack. The Indictment Chamber of the Chambery Court of Appeal set the case for the Haute-Savoie Assize Court, with the possibility of appeal to the Court of Cassation. President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte visited the injured children in hospital shortly after the incident.
Why it matters
The trial will determine accountability for a high-profile violent attack that shocked tourists and raised concerns about public safety in French resorts.
