Man and ex-partner found dead after suspected homicide-suicide on A1 viaduct

Police discovered a man and a woman, believed to be his former partner, dead after falling from the Alteta viaduct on the A1 near Barberino del Mugello, with investigators weighing a homicide-suicide scenario.

In the early afternoon, a patrol of the road police responded to a report and found two bodies on the Alteta viaduct of the A1 highway, situated at the junction between the Panoramica and Direttissima routes in the Barberino del Mugello municipality. The victims appear to be a man and a woman, identified as his former partner. Preliminary findings point to a possible homicide-suicide, with the hypothesis that the man forced the woman off the bridge before leaping himself, though investigators have not ruled out a femicide-suicide motive.

The scene also saw the presence of fire brigade units and personnel from the 4th Trunk Directorate of Autostrade per l’Italia. As a safety measure, the section of the A1 Panoramica between the Direttissima junction and Roncobilaccio was temporarily closed at around 15:30. Motorists heading to Pian del Voglio or Rioveggio were advised to take the A1 Direttissima, exit at Badia, use local roads, and re-enter the Panoramica at Pian del Voglio station.
