Man arrested after carjacking, crash injures pedestrian near Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building

Police detained a 36-year-old man who allegedly hijacked a car, drove erratically on George Street and collided with a ride-share vehicle and a police car, injuring a woman in her 50s.

Police say a 36-year-old man forcibly removed a woman in her 20s from a Mazda sedan at the King and Pitt intersection in Sydney’s CBD, then proceeded to drive recklessly along George Street. At about 9 p.m., his vehicle collided head-on with a ride-share car near Market Street, and the combined wreckage struck a police car parked near the light-rail tracks at the Queen Victoria Building. The impact also hit a woman in her 50s walking on Market Street, causing head injuries that left her in stable condition at a hospital.

Witnesses reported the suspect was drenched in blood and wearing only his underwear when officers arrested him outside the QVB. He was transferred to St Vincent’s Hospital under police escort while investigators consider whether drugs played a role. The police car involved is part of a routine proactive patrol near the QVB, and the light-rail service resumed normal operation the following morning.
