Man arrested after police chase ends with hazardous materials found in vehicle

A 39-year-old driver was detained after a 30 km police pursuit in Auckland ended at an intersection where hazardous substances were discovered in his car.

During a 30 km pursuit across Auckland, police tried to halt a fleeing driver in the Karaka district, monitoring the suspect from an Eagle helicopter before spiking the vehicle. The car came to a halt at the intersection of Market and Great South Roads in Epsom, where the driver was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple hazardous substances, prompting Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews to safely contain and transport the materials to a secure forensic facility.

Diversions were set up around the intersection, and motorists were warned to avoid the area. The 39-year-old man now faces charges for possessing hazardous materials with intent, dangerous driving and failing to stop, and is scheduled to appear before the Manukau District Court.
