Man arrested and charged after arson attack on Liberal MP Salma Zahid's driveway

Toronto police have detained a 24-year-old man and filed multiple arson-related charges following the fire that damaged Salma Zahid’s car and a neighboring vehicle.

Toronto police announced the arrest of Roshvin Crofton, 24, on Sunday in connection with a suspected arson that set fire to the car of Liberal MP Salma Zahid and a neighboring vehicle last week. Crofton has been charged with arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of incendiary material and breaching a probation order. The incident took place in the driveway of Zahid’s residence in the Scarborough Centre area, prompting a police seizure of a vehicle thought to be involved.

Investigators say a second suspect remains at large. The attack drew criticism from multiple elected officials, notably Prime Minister Mark Carney. Zahid, who has represented Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East since 2015, currently chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
