Man Bitten Twice by Shortfin Mako While Kayak Fishing Off Malibu Coast
A kayaker near Paradise Cove in Malibu was attacked twice by a shortfin mako shark after his hook snagged the predator.
Early Sunday morning, a man fishing from a kayak roughly two miles offshore near Paradise Cove in Malibu hooked a shortfin mako shark. As he attempted to detach the hook, the shark bit him, released, then came back, shoved him off the kayak and bit his leg a second time. Lifeguard Alex Buford described the sequence to officials, and the injured fisherman was transported to a local hospital, though his condition remains unknown.
The L.A. County Fire Department responded to the scene but did not provide additional information. Recent months have seen a rise in shark sightings along the California coast, including a whale shark and a hammerhead near Malibu. The shortfin mako is a known resident of these waters and is considered dangerous because of its speed and size.
