Man charged with murder after breaking into debtor's Budapest apartment

The Budapest Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against a 20-year-old who broke into a debtor’s flat in the city’s 18th district and caused his death. The conflict originated from a loan the suspect gave in March 2025 to a friend’s father, who promised to repay it two days later but later claimed he was hospitalized and could not pay. After discovering the creditor was not ill and owed other debts, the suspect located his residence, entered through a broken window with his girlfriend and another accomplice, and engaged in a prolonged violent assault, ultimately abandoning the victim, who died several hours afterward.

Prosecutors allege the killing was motivated by greed and extreme cruelty, and have asked the Budapest Court to impose a severe prison term, ruling out conditional release. Because the offender was under 20 at the time, a life sentence without parole is not permissible. He remains under electronic monitoring pending the court’s ruling.
