Man charged with murder after punching Elizabeth Line employee who later died
A 29-year-old Ilford resident is accused of killing a 61-year-old Transport for London worker with a single punch after missing his train.
On the evening of 4 December 2024, Ayodele Jamgbadi missed his train at Ilford Station and reacted by kicking an advertisement frame. Transport for London staff, including customer-experience assistant Jorge Ortega, approached to calm him. Jamgbadi punched Ortega once in the face, sending the employee to the platform floor where he struck his head and lost consciousness.
Ortega was taken to hospital but succumbed to a severe brain injury two days later. Prosecutors upgraded the charge from causing grievous bodily harm to murder after the death. Jamgbadi has been declared unfit to plead, so a jury must determine whether he committed the act and caused the fatal injury. The case has drawn comments from the RMT union and the prime minister, highlighting concerns over safety on the network.
