Man charged with murder after shooting Culver City bus driver who wouldn't stop

A passenger identified as Jose Antonio Zayas has been charged with murder for fatally shooting bus driver Bruce Rodriguez after the driver could not stop the vehicle in traffic.

Jose Antonio Zayas boarded a public bus in Culver City on October 1 and requested that driver Bruce Rodriguez stop so he could get off. Traffic congestion and the bus's location on South Centinela Avenue in Mar Vista prevented the driver from pulling over. According to the Los Angeles County district attorney, Zayas then drew a handgun and shot Rodriguez several times, resulting in the driver’s death.

After the shooting, Zayas retrieved his bicycle from the rack and escaped, but was found and arrested the next day. He now faces a murder charge with special circumstances, including the killing of a transportation employee and firearm use, as well as a felon-in-possession count. The incident sparked a memorial at Wildwood Elementary School, where friends and family honored Rodriguez, who is survived by his wife, a three-year-old son and a six-month-old baby. Officials emphasized the need to keep public transit safe for drivers and riders.
