Man convicted of murder after assault blocked victim’s life-saving cancer treatment

Alfie Conway-Ryle was found guilty of murder at Croydon Crown Court for a June 2024 attack that left William Ffrench in a coma, preventing him from receiving cancer treatment and leading to his death.

On 27 June 2024, Alfie Conway-Ryle assaulted William Ffrench in Southwark Park, deliberately tripping him and stamping his head more than 15 times within 40 seconds, as captured on CCTV. The brutal attack caused catastrophic brain damage, multiple facial fractures and broken ribs, leaving Ffrench comatose. While hospitalized, he was diagnosed with lung cancer, but doctors concluded his condition precluded life-saving treatment, and he died in March 2025 at age 66.

A murder investigation involved his treating clinician, an oncologist, a neuropathologist and a forensic pathologist, leading prosecutors to upgrade the charge from attempted murder to murder. At Croydon Crown Court, a jury found Conway-Ryle guilty, and he will be sentenced on 4 December. Detective Inspector Richard Mackenzie highlighted the long suffering of the victim’s family and the importance of holding the attacker accountable.

Why it matters

The case sets a precedent that fatal outcomes from denied medical care can constitute murder.
