Man dies after being taken to Dubrajpur police station, family alleges custodial assault
Barjahan Shah, a 35-year-old Muslim man, died after being brought to Dubrajpur police station in Birbhum, West Bengal, where his family says he was beaten and denied medical help.
Barjahan Shah, 35, was taken to Dubrajpur police station in Birbhum district after villagers accused him of theft. He was later found dead at Dubrajpur Mansaray Hospital, with his family alleging he was assaulted in custody and denied timely medical care. His son, Ismail Shah, says CCTV footage captures the abuse, though the video has not been independently verified.
An eyewitness, Sheikh Jahangir, reported seeing Shah in a very weak condition at around 6:30 pm inside the station. Police maintain that a mob beat Shah before they rescued him, and Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Roy denied custodial assault. A post-mortem and a review of the station’s CCTV are pending, while relatives and locals protest and demand an impartial inquiry.
