Man dies after cardiac arrest while restrained by Carabinieri in Lodi

A 39-year-old man arrested by Carabinieri in Lodi died after a cardiac arrest while being held on the ground.

Police in Lodi, near Milan, detained a 39-year-old man after locals alerted them to his presence on a private property’s perimeter wall, where he was suspected of trying to break in. Because he was shouting and thrashing, Carabinieri officers forced him onto the ground and held him there. While restrained, the man went into cardiac arrest; officers used a defibrillator to resuscitate him before transporting him to a hospital.

He died several hours after arrival. The Prosecutor’s Office is gathering testimonies from the Carabinieri and examining 112 emergency calls. This death follows other recent Italian cases, including the July killing of Abderrahim Fakir in Bologna and the 2014 death of Riccardo Magherini in Florence, which led to a European Court of Human Rights damages ruling. Rights groups are drawing parallels with the George Floyd case.
