Man dies after medical emergency while detained at NYPD Brooklyn precinct
Reginald Newkirk, 54, died a day after suffering a medical episode while held at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush awaiting court transfer.
A 54-year-old man identified as Reginald Newkirk was taken into custody on Friday for criminal possession of a controlled substance and held at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush. While awaiting transfer to criminal court, he experienced a rapid health decline on Saturday, leading police to call emergency services. He was transported to a nearby hospital just before 2:15 p.m. and stayed there through the night.
Newkirk was declared dead on Sunday, with officials still awaiting the official cause of death. This incident follows several recent deaths of detainees in NYPD custody, including a 46-year-old man on Sept. 9 and two individuals in April who suffered withdrawal symptoms. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division has been assigned to investigate the case.
