Man dies after police confrontation at Melbourne's Clayton train station

Around 7:10 pm on Sunday, police and Protective Service Officers were dispatched to Clayton railway station in Melbourne's south-east after receiving reports of a highly agitated man carrying a knife. The individual was observed pacing the concourse before stepping onto the tracks, prompting officials to cordon the area and halt train services. Officers attempted to negotiate and employed non-lethal tactical equipment, later joined by a Critical Incident Response Team.

The man was eventually taken into custody but soon lost consciousness; ambulance paramedics provided immediate care but were unable to revive him. Detectives from the Homicide Squad will now lead an investigation under the oversight of Professional Standards Command. As a result, services on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines stay suspended, with buses substituting trains between Oakleigh and Westall.
