Man faces additional terrorism-related charges after Halifax consulate bomb threat
Halifax police added two new charges to Ali Assakereh, who is accused of placing a propane tank and flammable liquids near the U.S. consulate in August.
Police in Halifax arrested Ali Assakereh, 54, on Aug. 10 when they discovered a propane tank and flammable liquids in his vehicle parked near the United States consulate in the city’s downtown core. The discovery prompted the closure of several streets while officers secured the area and examined a nearby suspicious bag. He was first charged with uttering threats and public mischief, and on Aug. 19 received an additional charge of threatening an internationally protected person under Section 424 of the Criminal Code, which is treated as a terrorism offence with a possible life-sentence penalty.
In a recent update, investigators announced two more criminal charges tied to hoax terrorist activity. The Crown will bring the case forward, and Assakereh is scheduled to appear before a court in November.
Why it matters
The added terrorism-related charges raise the potential penalty and highlight security concerns around diplomatic sites in Canada.
