Man fatally stabbed near Atlanta Beltline, suspect Jonathan Hamby arrested

A 29-year-old man died after being stabbed on Sunday afternoon near the Beltline in Atlanta, and police have taken a 54-year-old suspect into custody.

On Sunday afternoon, a 29-year-old male resident of Atlanta was killed after being stabbed near the Beltline walking trail at 725 Ponce de Leon Avenue. The incident happened shortly after 4 p.m., according to Chief of Police Darin Schierbaum. Law enforcement quickly identified and detained a suspect, 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby, who has an extensive arrest history and was on active probation for a prior aggravated assault in Brookhaven.

Authorities say the confrontation began as a verbal argument that escalated when Hamby retrieved a knife and stabbed the victim, leading to his death. Police have recovered the weapon used in the attack. This follows a previous fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old woman on the Beltline in May. The investigation remains ongoing.
