Man found guilty of killing cellmate after prior violent assault in Auckland

Siitia Junior Falesefulu, previously acquitted of murder and attempted murder on grounds of insanity for a severe bus-stop beating, was later placed in a shared cell with inmate Rob Fitzpatrick at Mt Eden Prison on June 14. During a 15-minute assault, Falesefulu inflicted catastrophic head wounds, neck compression injuries, and blunt-force torso trauma on Fitzpatrick, leaving the cell drenched in blood. The court heard a harrowing victim impact statement from Fitzpatrick's mother and sister, who blamed systemic failures for the cell-mate pairing.

Judges noted Falesefulu's repeated violence, non-compliance with treatment, and profound lack of insight into his actions. Consequently, Justice Simon Mount ordered indefinite detention as a special patient, emphasizing the public safety risk of release. The decision also included a media restriction on publishing Falesefulu's photograph to avoid aggravating his delusions.
