Man found legally insane for Davis stabbings ordered to state hospital
A California judge committed Carlos Reales Dominguez to a state psychiatric hospital for at least 180 days after finding him legally insane at the time of the 2023 Davis stabbings.
In Yolo County Superior Court, Judge Sam McAdam issued a commitment order sending Carlos Reales Dominguez to a state psychiatric facility for a minimum of 180 days after determining he was legally insane during the 2023 Davis stabbings that killed Karim Abou Najm and David Breaux and injured others. Earlier juries had acquitted him of murder but convicted him of two involuntary manslaughter charges. The hearing featured emotional victim impact statements from Najm’s mother Nadine Yehya, his father Majdi Abou Najm, and Breaux’s sister Annemaria Breaux, who also expressed forgiveness toward the attacker.
The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office plans to petition for a two-year extension of Dominguez’s hospitalization, though a trial on the petition is set for no later than April 12. The judge noted Dominguez has already served the maximum sentence allowed for involuntary manslaughter but must remain confined until his sanity is restored.
