Man in his 20s dies after fleeing police and entering canal near Notting Hill Carnival

Metropolitan Police officers attempted to intercept a man in his 20s near Harrow Road as he headed toward the Notting Hill Carnival on Monday. He fled on foot, and shortly thereafter entered the canal close to Meanwhile Gardens off Kensal Road. Officers and members of the public rescued him from the water and performed CPR before paramedics arrived.

He was taken to a central London hospital where he was pronounced dead at 16:43. Commander Claire Smart expressed condolences and noted that any death following police contact will be examined by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Police also reported that the two-day festival proceeded largely without incident, with two knife assaults and 315 arrests on Monday, bringing the total to 560.
