Man in underwear mask attempts supermarket robbery, steals hearse and flees
A 36-year-old man wearing underwear over his face tried to rob a Carrefour Market in Braine-l’Alleud, fled in a stolen hearse and was later detained.
On 13-14 July, a 36-year-old man from Braine-l’Alleud entered a Carrefour Market wearing his underwear as a mask and concealed tattoos under a jumper. He threatened a 16-year-old cashier with a detached blade from an electric meat-knife, claiming knowledge of her address, but she refused to surrender the till and he left without money. Afterwards he set fire to some of his clothing in a nearby hallway, causing a fire alarm and evacuation, then broke into several parked cars before taking a Mercedes hearse belonging to a funeral firm.
Using bank cards found in the vehicle, he bought cigarettes at two petrol stations captured on CCTV, then drove to Brussels where police awaited him. He resisted arrest at Braine-l’Alleud police station, breaking a leg while being restrained, and now faces charges of assault, arson, attempted extortion, weapon possession, cocaine possession and vehicle theft. He admitted most offenses, citing a dazed state, and a judge will deliver a verdict on 17 November.
