Man killed after fleeing police chase on M56, second driver arrested

A motorcyclist died after running across the M56 following a police pursuit, and a second driver was taken into custody at the scene.

Greater Manchester Police observed a red motorbike behaving dangerously on the M60 clockwise around Stockport Pyramid shortly before 7.30 pm on Saturday and initiated a pursuit that moved onto the M56. Tactical contact was made at low speed on the hard shoulder near Junction 5, after which the rider abandoned the bike and ran across the motorway, striking another vehicle and later being pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

A separate driver involved in the collision was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs and of driving uninsured. North West Ambulance Service attended but could not save the motorcyclist. The case has been handed to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit is seeking further information, including dash-cam or CCTV footage.

Why it matters

The death highlights risks of high-speed police pursuits and raises questions about road safety and police procedures.
