Man loses millions in cryptocurrency theft, police launch investigation

A 38-year-old man discovered that his cryptocurrency holdings were transferred without his consent, prompting a police probe.

A 38-year-old man realized his cryptocurrency assets had been moved from his digital wallet without authorization during a visit to Teluk Intan. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin explained that preliminary checks showed the illicit transfers occurred via a blockchain network, and the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s Cryptocurrency Unit is helping trace the funds. The incident is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a potential prison term, whipping and a fine.

Police counsel crypto users to stay vigilant against phishing, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never share recovery phrases, private keys or passwords. They also recommend regularly reviewing transaction records, separating savings wallets from daily-use wallets, and preserving digital evidence if a breach is suspected.

Why it matters

The theft highlights growing cyber-crime risks for cryptocurrency users and the need for stronger digital security.
